Law Day and Essay Scholarship Awards 2015

The Bar Association’s annual Law Day and Essay Contest scholarship awards dinner is being held on November 12.   Local lawyers, judges, and other members of the legal community will be in attendance. The Law Day theme for 2015  selected by the American Bar Association is the Magna Carta.

The Nevada County Bar has conducted, since 1978, a high-school essay contest to reward academic excellence in local high schools, first with U.S. Savings bonds and later with scholarship money donated by the local Bar.   The scholarship winners are the authors of the top three essays on  “The Magna Carta: Judicial Interpretation of the Constitution and the Evolution of Individual Rights.”  The winners will be announced at Thursday’s dinner.

The Bar is fortunate to have as a speaker on this topic McGeorge School of Law Professor Leslie G. Jacobs.

Professor Jacobs has been the Director of the Capital Center for Public Law and Policy at McGeorge since 2008, and on the faculty since 1993. She is a frequent speaker and commentator in regional media on current Constitutional issues.

The NCBA Law Day event has evolved over the years, but local attorneys and judges have continued to gather each year to recognize the achievement and promise of area high school students and to promote public discussion of significant and relevant legal concepts.
